Shallow dishes and bowls such as this were likely used as serving and dining vessels. Alabaster was a very popular material for carving, especially in the production of bowls, dishes and jars which were used for a variety of purposes. This is largely due to both it's beautiful warm glow and its soft porous qualities which made it far easier to work with in comparison to materials such as marble.
