This charming little vessel is a hard stone kohl jar which would have been used to store make up and paired with a stick used to assist with application. It features a squat globular body on a ring foot and a separate disc collared rim which could be taken on and off.

Nicks, scratches and abrasions to the disc rim, with a large loss on underside. Small chips and losses throughout body.

Kohl is the modern name for the dark eyeliner worn by the Egyptians. The powdered cosmetic was stored in small, lidded jars. In the Middle Kingdom, the preferred shape was the squat jar with a wide, flat rim, which could often be detached.
