From the lid of an anthropoid coffin, this beautiful wooden mummy mask is painted in bright pigment over a gessoed surface.  Yellow has been used for the skin tones of the face, black for the delineating features including the eye outlines, irises, brows, and cosmetic lines, while white is employed for the sclerae of the eyes. There is a black dot in between the brows, and the preserved portions of the broad wig are executed in alternating blue and yellow stripes. A fillet of red, yellow, white and blue runs horizontally above a section of blue that is embellished with yellow dots just above the forehead. Dowls can be found in the center and on both sides of the preserved portions of the wig.

Superb condition with generous remaining pigment as shown. Minor areas of chips, flaking, and losses to the face. With large areas of the gessoed surface missing under the wig and headdress revealing the wood grain below. Some losses and fading to the dotted portion of the wig and fillet. Dowels to each side and center of wig, overall the wood is in a very fine state of preservation.

"Coffin mask from a small group of wooden coffins for women, discovered around 1870 in the Sedment necropolis. These coffins are characterized by a distinctive yellow color, large eyes, a headband, and a vulture-feather headdress motif—sometimes featuring a dot between the eyebrows. The forms are carefully carved. 22nd Dynasty, circa 944 – 716 BC.
This group of objects is discussed by Ed. Naville (pp. 11–12, Pl. VII–VIII); see also the Sotheby’s catalogue (16), p. 22."
