This exquisite sculpture masterfully carved from a rich grey schist represents the well proportioned torso of a Bodhisattva figure. Characteristic of Gandharan art of the period, the naturalistic depiction of the bare-chested Bodhisattva features a magnificent highly detailed necklace laid on top of a broad collar or torc.  Elegant monk's robes are gently draped over the shoulder while the delicately rendered folds of his dhoti cover the lower body. As discussed in more detail in the notes below, these soft, cascading pleats in the dress are directly inspired by the art and fashion of the ancient Greek world and the Hellenistic period.

Private Collection, Brussels Belgium. FM Consult, Saint Ouen France, 2021. Gallerie La Belle Epoque, Poznan, Poland.

Fragmented as shown. With surface wear, chips and nicks throughout. Large loss to the left arm. Otherwise superb state of preservation with intricate detail and crisp edges.

The art of the ancient region of Gandhara is often referred to as Greco-Buddhist art, as the people of Gandhara were largely inspired by Greek art. The oldest known representations of the Buddha in this region, dating from the 1st century AD, are often compared to Greek statues of Apollo. From the 4th century BC, the time of the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greek settlers established cities in the region, which resulted in an intensive cultural and material exchange between the inhabitants of the region and the Greek and Roman world, which lasted several centuries.
