This is a rare and extraordinary stucco Buddha figure from part of a larger architectural structure in ancient Gandhara. Our example has a disposition that is both sweet and serene, featuring softly arched eyebrows above gently down cast eyes, and a regal aquiline nose above plump full lips. His hair is wrapped in a high tight bun while he sits cross-legged on a rectangular plinth, with both hands in dhyana mudra on his lap. The well modeled robes are draped in an arch-shaped cowl around the neck covering the shoulders, while the remainder of the garment stretches fully over the folded knees and gathers elegantly between the legs. Displayed on a custom-made stand.

Michael Phillips Collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA

Fine condition, with surface wear, chips and nicks throughout. Some losses to polychromy. Broken and repaired at the neck. Light incrustation in patches to the robes and integral base.

This is a typical example of the molded stucco works that were popular during the later period of Gandharan art. Sites throughout Afghanistan, had numerous Buddhist stupas. Each was decorated with images of the Buddha in niches around the square bases. This Buddha is typical of the seated type, with both feet covered by the robe and hands held gently in the meditation gesture, resting on his lap.
